Child was a trailblazer for women in politics. On 11 February 1986, she became Australia's first Woman Speaker, the first woman to ever preside over the House of Representatives.
A Labor pioneer, she was also the first woman elected to the House for Labor in May 1974.
She brought integrity, fairness and a modern approach to the chamber - including ditching the traditional wig and gown.
Child had a strong focus on social justice and was unafraid to stand firm in a male-dominated Parliament, paving the way for the next generation of women leaders to follow.
