Shine a light on our treasured rural volunteers and unsung female heroes
NSW residents can now nominate a much-loved ‘unsung hero’ for the 2021-22 Hidden Treasures Honour Roll, which pays public tribute to the vast number of rural women across NSW who have given their time and energy to helping others in their communities.
Coordinated by the NSW Rural Women’s Network, nominations are open to girls and women living outside of Sydney, Newcastle or Wollongong for volunteering contributions made in 2021 and 2022.
Nationals Minister for Women Bronnie Taylor said honouring the contributions of women in rural communities ensures unpaid work is valued, respected and celebrated.
“Rural women play an important role in keeping our communities connected. Whether it’s volunteering at the local school, organising weekend sport or planning fundraisers, women are often unsung heroes. I urge people to recognise the contributions of rural women by nominating them for the Hidden Treasures Honour Roll,” Mrs Taylor said.
Minister for Families and Communities Natasha Maclaren-Jones, the Minister responsible for volunteering, encouraged people to nominate a woman who has excelled in serving her community.
“There are so many amazing women across rural NSW who generously give their time to support individuals and groups within their communities, through volunteering in aged care, emergency services, environmental management, health, sport, education and tourism,” Mrs Maclaren-Jones said.
Nationals Minister for Agriculture and Western NSW Dugald Saunders said volunteers are playing a vital role in regional communities after a challenging few years.
“The regions have been hammered by drought, bushfires, floods and the pandemic, so volunteers are playing a more important role than ever before and deserve some kudos,” Mr Saunders said.
“It’s a privilege to be able to celebrate volunteers who give so much of their own time, effort and dedication to our communities.”
The Hidden Treasures Honour Roll first launched in 2010 and has recognised more than 1,000 volunteers across NSW.
Nominations for the Honour Roll are now open and close November 30.
