Domestic violence should never be normalised or excused.

In the Senate, I spoke from my own experience about what happens when violence is tolerated and consequences are absent.

For too long, a lack of real consequences has allowed violence to continue - and, in many cases, to escalate. That failure does not protect victims, families, or communities.

Mandatory domestic violence laws are about drawing a clear line.

They enforce accountability and make it clear that violence will not be tolerated.

If we are serious about reducing domestic violence, then real consequences must be part of the solution.

This week, the Northern Territory introduced nation-leading mandatory domestic violence laws - focused on early intervention, accountability, and community safety.

I hope other Australian states and territories will follow Lia Finocchiaro's example.
