Perth Gears Up for Big Sports Week: Socceroos, Supercars

Perth is set for a blockbuster week of sport, with the Socceroos taking on Japan in a FIFA World Cup 2026 Qualifier on Thursday, 5 June before the 2025 Bosch Power Tools Perth Super 440 kicks off on Friday, 6 June.

With Japan and the Socceroos as the top-ranked Group C teams of the Round Three AFC Asian Qualifiers, Thursday’s football match at Perth Stadium promises fierce competition, which is expected to bring thousands of visitors to Western Australia and put millions of eyes across the world on the State through the event’s global broadcast.

The match is the final home soil fixture for the Socceroos in their Round Three AFC Asian Qualifiers – Road To 26 Qualification campaign and will play an important role in determining their ranking heading into the final match of Round Three, with a chance to qualify directly for the FIFA World Cup 2026.

Football fans looking for more live action will have the opportunity to attend a Socceroos open training session this afternoon from 5pm to 6pm at Perth Rectangular Stadium.

The 2025 Perth Super 440 will continue the excitement on Friday when it brings thousands of more visitors to the State for three fast-paced days, showcasing 26 drivers and 12 teams racing on one of the most dynamic tracks in the national series.

The 2025 Perth Super 440 will be the first time the Perth event will feature the exciting new Super 440 format, which includes:

As one of 13 racing events in the Repco Supercars Championship, the 2025 Perth Super 440 will make CARCO.com.au Raceway the first track in Supercars Championship history to host 100 championship races.

Socceroos v Japan and the Perth Super 440 are the latest in a series of events secured by the WA Government through its always on, year-round events strategy, which seeks to deliver a diverse calendar of events that give visitors a time-sensitive reason to book a trip to Western Australia.

Event tourism forms a major part of the WA Labor Government’s efforts to support local jobs, diversify the economy and generate valuable tourism dollars for local businesses and industry.

In 2023-24, events generated a record $286 million for the local economy from major, large, regional and mass participation events.

As stated by Tourism Minister Reece Whitby:

“It’s an incredibly exciting week of sport and entertainment in Perth, with the Socceroos taking on Japan for an important fixture in their journey to the FIFA World Cup 2026, and the Supercars marking a milestone 100 races in Perth with a fast-paced new race format.

“These events will each draw thousands of visitors to Perth this week, which is going to generate a major boost for our tourism and hospitality businesses, add vibrancy to the city, and support local jobs.

“Our intention is to secure major events that keep our tourism industry booming even through the winter months, and this week proves we’re achieving that goal with these two major events taking place back-to-back.”

As stated by Sport and Recreation Minister Rita Saffioti:

“Sports fans will no doubt be revelling in the excitement of this week for Perth, with the crucial FIFA World Cup Qualifier kicking off a massive few days of action.

“We’re proud to support these types of events that cater for everyone, whether you follow the round ball game, motorsports or just enjoy the spectacle.

“Of course, this kicks off a massive winter of sport here in WA with the Matildas playing international friendlies, Game II of the NRL State of Origin, the British and Irish Lions playing our Western Force and Perth Glory facing Italian giants AC Milan in a pre-season match at the end of July.”
