Carers Foundation Visit
Around three million Australians provide significant care to someone else – a child with special needs, an ill parent, a sibling, a senior with dementia, sometimes a neighbour with no family.
Those permanently caring for someone else can often be overwhelmed by the task with impacts on their own health and wellbeing. They can feel isolated and marginalised.
More than quarter of a million of our nation’s carers are young people between the ages of 13 and 25.
I think it’s difficult to understand the pressures and impacts caring for someone else full time can have, if you haven’t experienced it personally.
Family carers, and the support they provide to others in our communities, are often overlooked and undervalued.
Carers need care themselves and hidden away in our part of the world in the beautiful, peaceful and secluded surrounds of Cedar Creek is an organisation that does just that – the Carers Foundation Australia.
The Foundation provides ‘time-out’ for carers, a place they can retreat to for time to regain their mental and physical wellbeing.
Small groups are taken on the retreats where they receive support, counselling, wellness guidance and the chance to meet and share experiences with others dealing with similar difficulties and issues.
Before the last election I committed to pursue grant funding for the Carers Foundation Australia so that they could expand their programmes for carers.
Earlier this year a grant of $400,000 was made and in a few short months 30 carers were provided respite at Cedar Creek carers centre.
This year they hope to help 200 to 250 carers through the grant funding.
