Peter Dutton

The Vietnam War was one of the bloodiest conflicts of the Cold War.

Of the 60,000 Australians who served, more than 3,000 were wounded and 523 killed.

Today, on the 11th of January, we commemorate the end of Australia’s involvement in Vietnam.

Significantly, this year marks the 50th anniversary of when the Governor-General issued a proclamation which concluded Australia’s longest military engagement of the 20th century.

Returning home, many Australian veterans were subjected to hostility, ingratitude and indifference. They should never have been disrespected and mistreated in this way. Our nation has learnt valuable lessons so we never repeat the mistakes of the past.

To all Vietnam veterans, your country today is eternally grateful for your service and sacrifice. You did your duty. You fought for freedom. You will never be forgotten.
