Pocket Road Reopens After Steel Culvert Inspection
The Pocket Road has reopened today (16 February) following a safety inspection of the steel culvert by Council engineers.
Byron Shire Council is continuing detailed investigations into the long term structural repairs needed, and temporary closures may still be required during periods of heavy rainfall.
"We understand the impact these closures can have on local residents and appreciate the community's patience as we work towards a safe and permanent solution," Phil Holloway, Director Infrastructure Services, said.
The culvert, located between 860 and 879 The Pocket Road, was closed on Friday (13 February) after an assessment found it was at high risk of failure during major rain events, particularly when fast moving water flows through the structure.
"During storm events, where the water level rises and the flow becomes much stronger, there is an increased risk of soil erosion. As this soil is lost, the structure loses the support it needs to stay stable, potentially leading to collapse, a situation we have, tragically, witnessed in other local government areas," Mr Holloway said.
Friday's temporary closure followed a significant weather event that delivered more than 100 mm of rain in under three hours, recorded at the Helen Street Bridge gauge.
