Productive Partnerships Key To Environmental Progress

The recent opening of the Gol Gol Wetlands flume gate is a win for partnerships in the Murray-Darling Basin.

The Gol Gol Wetlands are located in far west New South Wales (NSW) near Mildura.

The new flume gate allows water flow into the wetlands even when the Murray River is low.

Since March, 1.25 billion litres of water for the environment has flowed into the wetlands. That’s about equal to 500 Olympic swimming pools.

The water was an equal contribution from Commonwealth and NSW water for the environment.

This water is helping nature recover. Conditions are better for waterbirds who are returning to make nests and for the growth of floodplain trees.

The need for the gate was identified by water experts, engineers and the local community working together. It will allow flows entering the wetland to be measured.

Commonwealth Environmental Water Holder Dr Simon Banks was there to see the opening of the flume gate and the benefits it can bring to this ecosystem.

“The installation of a flume gate at Lake Gol Gol, which the CEWH contributed to, reflects a huge amount of work,” Dr Banks said.

“The key ingredient for water delivery and these types of environmental projects is partnerships.

“The success of the Lake Gol Gol project and the amazing outcomes for the lake and surrounding area is the result of the many partnerships developed with the local community and First Nations groups.”

For environmental water to flow across the length of the Murray-Darling Basin when and where it’s needed requires partnerships.

The Commonwealth Environmental Water Holder works with a broad coalition of groups and individuals across the Murray-Darling Basin (MDB) to plan, deliver and monitor water for the environment. This includes:

The CEWH also partners with organisations to support environmental projects that enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of environmental water in the Murray-Darling Basin.

This collaboration with funding partner NSW Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water and Gol Gol Community Reference Group has resulted in another win for CEWH Environmental Activities.
