Promoting Fair And Respectful Workplaces In Arts And Cultural Sector

Australian artists, arts workers, and creative organisations can now access clear information about their rights and obligations through the new Creative Workplaces website.

The website – creativeworkplaces.gov.au – is a central hub of resources on topics such as pay, working conditions, and work health and safety, including bullying, discrimination and harassment.

Written for individuals and organisations working across all art forms, it includes practical examples of workplace issues in the creative industries context with referral information on pay, safety, and respect.

Creative Workplaces was established as part of the National Cultural Policy – Revive within Creative Australia, to promote fair, safe and respectful workplaces in the arts and culture sector.

This initiative responds to evidence of issues of pay, working conditions, safety and respect in the sector. People often struggle to access the workplace information and support services they need to address these problems.

The Creative Workplaces website, launched by the Australian Government in partnership with state and territory governments, reflects a shared commitment to improving working conditions in the sector.

“From information on starting a business to superannuation to health and wellbeing, we proudly support our workers through the new Creative Workplaces website providing practical, relevant and important resources to support creative workers and ensure they can continue to thrive in their careers and in safe, fair and respectful workplaces.”

Quotes attributable to New South Wales Minister for the Arts, John Graham:

“We recognise that artists are workers, and as we work to grow our creative industries, we need to make sure the workers get the pay and conditions they deserve.

“Creatives often aren’t nine-to-five, and many work for themselves – so being informed about your rights and obligations is even more important and that’s why we’re supporting this important resource.”
