Push for Collaboration in Public Housing Revamp
On 30 June 2025, Council representatives highlighted the urgent need for more social and affordable housing in Port Phillip, where nearly 5% of residents live in social housing and over 1,000 people are experiencing homelessness.
Council welcomed the Victorian Government’s Big Housing Build and called for a formal partnership with the State Government to ensure early and ongoing collaboration. Drawing on decades of experience and local expertise, Council can help deliver well-integrated, fit-for-purpose housing that meets community needs.
Officers also emphasised the importance of inclusive engagement, design excellence, and early infrastructure planning in state-led housing projects. These principles will guide Council’s approach and are reflected in its upcoming Homelessness and Affordable Housing Strategy.
City of Port Phillip are ready and willing partners. Together, with the Victorian Government, Council will seek to deliver lasting outcomes for the community.
