As the National Party’s leader in the Senate for a record 17 years, he was never flashy; as Ron would say, he was “not pretty, but pretty effective.” He worked relentlessly to deliver practical outcomes for the bush, standing up for party values and backing hard work and results over protest politics.
His service to the Liberal National Party and the National Party was lifelong and selfless—advancing the party’s cause in parliament and continuing to give his experience, counsel, and energy long after his retirement.
