“This work is a wonderful winner, in that it showcases the background as much as the sitter. Jonathon Sriranganathan is a distinctive and well known Brisbane identity, and the other star of the portrait, Brisbane’s distinctive suburbs, shows the emerging high rises in west end, the subtropical Brisbane foliage, Mt Coot-tha and the architecture.
The intense colour and vibrancy is reflective of Jonathon and for locals it has that personal feel.. without knowing Jonathon, you can feel his affection for the area.
It is different from every other work in the finalists exhibition, in that it is hyper realistic .. the colour clashes and assaults your senses, but it has a sense of fun, complete with the careful rendering of the bush turkey.”
