⚠️ Did you know, this wouldn’t be the first time Australia’s had a national rent freeze?
📈 At the beginning of WW2, rents were frozen and eviction protections introduced to protect against “rampant profiteering in essential services”.
🔕 At that time, half of Australians were renters and the Government feared a serious undersupply of housing would cause spiralling rents and wholesale evictions.
➡️ The situation today doesn’t look so different – rents have increased 17.5% in capital cities in the last year alone, rental markets are incredibly tight and families across the country are facing homelessness because they can’t find affordable housing.
🪝 We’re in a national housing and cost of living crisis and rampant rent increases are pushing millions of families to the brink. Either we freeze rents now or a national crisis could become a national tragedy.
