Excellent update from Michael Berkman – Greens MP for Maiwar on the good and the bad of the Labor State Government’s 10 year energy plan 👇

I’m excited that the Labor State Government’s 10 year energy plan announced yesterday includes progress on 3 key areas the Greens were pushing for: steeper emissions reduction targets, earlier closure of coal-fired power stations, and an energy worker support package.

They’ve clearly been copying our homework, and nothing makes me happier… but we can’t let up yet.

The plan the Premier released yesterday:

❌ Is still inconsistent with current climate science and won’t meet our Paris Agreement obligations
❌ Doesn’t include a clear timeline to close coal-fired power stations in the next decade, leaving workers without real certainty and security

The Government is also planning to approve new coal and gas projects, with no end date or transition plan for mining and exporting fossil fuels from Queensland.

Building more renewables is great news, but the state’s overall emissions reduction targets are still on par with the former Morrison Government’s – just 30% by 2030. Scientists say we need at least 75% cuts by 2030, and no new coal or gas.

It’s clear to me that Labor saw the Greens vote this past Federal election and are looking to us for policies.

I suggest they stop approving new coal and gas and back in an energy transition authority, like the one proposed federally by Senator Penny Allman-Payne next.
