Have you heard of the Toondah Harbour development in Moreton Bay? A huge developer, Walker Corporation, wants to build a massive luxury apartment development on environmentally important wetlands out near Cleveland 😞
These beautiful wetlands are home to thousands of migratory birds – many critically endangered, turtles and other marine life 🐦
The wetlands are Ramsar listed, which is an international convention, signed by Australia, intended to protect important wetland habitats. According to Federal environment laws, when considering development applications like this one, “the Minister must not act inconsistently with Australia’s obligations under the Ramsar Convention”. That means that Federal Environment Minister, Tanya Pliberseck, shouldn’t approve this development!
Unfortunately Walker Corporation has made big donations to the QLD state Labor party and the LNP. It would be unbelievably destructive for the Federal Government to approve this development.
Michael Berkman – Greens MP for Maiwar has done lots of work on this at a state level, and now Max Chandler-Mather, Federal MP for Griffith is asking the Federal Environment minister to reject this proposal. You can help too by signing the petition in the comments 📝
