Pressure works! After three years of relentless campaigning from the Greens and the local community, Labor has finally conceded that the Gabba rebuild was a ridiculous idea and an enormous waste of money, and called it off 🎉
Not only that, but we’ve SAVED RAYMOND PARK. Thanks to the hard work of the Greens and committed community campaigners, Labor’s original plan to demolish the park for a warm-up track is no more – meaning we’ve saved over 5 hectares of precious inner-city parkland from the Olympics wrecking ball.
Years ago the Greens and the community were the only ones opposing the disastrous Gabba demolition, and now with Labor’s backdown, we have won.
This is a historic victory that should give inspiration to communities across the world standing up to mega olympics infrastructure projects like this – when you are organised and united, you can win.
Well done and huge thanks to all the tireless campaigners from East Brisbane State School, Friends Of Raymond Park, Kangaroo Point and Rethink the Gabba who have worked for years to achieve this.
Now, we continue the fight until we know for sure that East Brisbane State School is safe. Right now, Labor refuses to confirm if the school will be impacted by the new planned upgrades.
The Greens are calling on Labor to finally commit to saving East Brisbane State School once and for all and stop toying with this community. It should be clear to Labor that three of the most densely populated suburbs in Brisbane need a public primary school!
