Thank you Senator Penny Allman-Payne ššš
Isnāt public education meant to be free?
Then why is it that each year, public schools are charging more āvoluntaryā fees to parents, and back to school costs are just getting higher and higher?
Labor and the Liberals are short-changing public schools by billions – and shifting thousands of dollars in costs per child onto families.
A new study this week found almost 1 in 3 families couldnāt afford back to school costs. Parents said they would have to either go into debt to cover costs, rely on charity or hand-me-downs, or that their kids will miss out.
Clearly existing cost of living supports arenāt enough.
The Greens have called on the government to adopt our plan to fully fund public schools, and also help cover incidentals with an $800 back to school cash boost per child to every family – paid for through taxing big corporations (1 in 3 of whom pay NO TAX currently!)
When I was a public school teacher, like so many of my colleagues, I regularly spent hundreds, if not thousands of dollars to dip into my own salary to give students the resources they need, and I know parents do the same. It shouldnāt be that way.
Every child deserves a free, world-class public education, and thatās what the Greens are fighting for.
