When the first national strike by Aussie Apple workers took place this week, Stephen Bates – Greens for Brisbane was there 💪 Before he was elected to federal Parliament, Stephen worked as an Apple retail worker and knows first-hand how desperately basic workplace rights are needed. More from Stephen 👇

I was incredibly proud to be able to stand in solidarity with my former coworkers today as they participated in the first national retail strike in Australian history.

As a former retail worker at Apple prior to being elected to Parliament, I know all too well how important it is to fight for the conditions that every worker should have as a bare minimum.

Change comes from the ground up and it is inspiring to see workers come together to fight for one another.

These workers are asking a trillion dollar company for the most basic workplace rights: fair pay, better work-life balance, and to be treated as the part-time and full-time employees they are hired as, and not the casualised workforce they are treated as.

It was amazing to be part of this historical moment for the union movement in our country and I look forward to Apple coming to the bargaining table with their workers into the future. Massive shout-out to my former union Retail and Fast Food Workers Union for leading the charge to organise retail workers ✊✊✊
