While our federal team is in Canberra, our state MPs are working hard in Estimates and speaking with the media about the terrible impact the Olympics will have on housing in Brisbane. More from Amy MacMahon – Greens MP for South Brisbane 👇
Queensland is already in a housing crisis – and the Olympics will make it worse. The Olympics has pushed up rents, rates and house prices in host cities worldwide, and hotels end up replacing homes.
That’s why I asked Annastacia Palaszczuk MP in Parliament about the government’s plans to ensure the 2032 Olympics don’t push everyday Queenslanders out of their communities.
Instead of outlining a plan to ensure rents and rates near Olympic sites don’t continue to skyrocket, she talked about how her government is ensuring athletes and Olympics staff have a cosy place to stay for two weeks.
Instead of outlining a plan to ensure hotels and short-term stays do not replace affordable homes, the Premier discussed how the Olympics would “revitalise” parts of the city.
“Revitalisation” might be great for the Premier’s property developer and real estate industry mates, but we already know the devastating impacts revitalisation and gentrification have on working and middle-class neighbourhoods.
This out-of-touch government doesn’t understand that the Olympics will drastically worsen the housing crisis if left unchecked – and they have no plans to stop Olympics-related evictions and homelessness.
