Queenslanders immortalised at Suncorp Stadium

  • New tribute to celebrate the greats of Queensland Rugby League opened at Suncorp Stadium.
  • 1,225 players responsible for building the Queenslander spirit celebrated.
  • New names to be added each year following State of Origin series.

The Crisafulli Government has unveiled a new permanent activation to celebrate the greats of Queensland Rugby League at Suncorp Stadium ahead of Origin I.

The “Queenslander” tribute captures Origin greats and Queensland representatives outside of Origin who have helped shape the game of rugby league and formed a part of Queensland culture.

In addition to the 274 male and female Origin stars, the tribute also celebrates 811 men and 140 women pre-Origin QRL Representatives dating back to 1908.

At least 7 new names will be added to the wall this year following the selection of Origin debutants in both the men’s and women’s series.

Minister for Sport and Racing and Minister for the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tim Mander said it’s powerful seeing all the players who have helped to create the Queenslander Origin spirit honoured at such an iconic location.

“Representing your State is no small achievement and its fitting we have a place to celebrate all our Queensland footy greats together,” Minister Mander said.

“There is no better place to showcase the players who have built Origin into the spectacle it is than the undeniable home of rugby league, Suncorp Stadium.

“These players have been heroes for Queenslanders for decades, uniting fans, igniting passion for the game, and attracting a whole legion of new fans to the game.

“The legends of the game celebrated in this tribute have no doubt served as an inspiration for our players putting on their Maroon jersey and representing Queensland tomorrow.”

Suncorp Stadium General Manager Alan Graham said the venue has been the stage for Queensland rugby league stars for decades.

“Suncorp Stadium is synonymous with some of the greatest moments and players in rugby league history and it’s great to see that rich history become a permanent fixture of the venue,” Mr Graham said.

“Having this legacy on show for all our patrons and visitors adds to the history of the Stadium and allows fans to soak up all that makes Origin and the Queenslander spirit so special.”

Queensland Rugby League CEO Ben Ikin said it’s important to recognise those who have helped shaped the game.

“To represent your state is an incredible honour and proud Queenslanders have done this with immense passion since 1908,” Mr Ikin said.

“It’s fantastic to have a physical acknowledgement of all the men and women who have created a lasting legacy for rugby league in Queensland, and to acknowledge the women who blazed a trail for our current women’s players.”

Former Origin Greats Board Member and Queensland Representative Karyn Murphy said having the women alongside the men shows the strides occurring in the game.

“Our women have a rich history contributing to the Queenslander spirit and having this tribute helps inspire the next generation,” Ms Murphy said.

“With the popularity of the women’s game, the current Origin players are becoming household names so it’s great to see the names of the women who paved the way for them celebrated as well.”

The tribute was designed by Populous with input from the Queensland Rugby League and their History Committee, the Former Origin Greats (FOGs) and the NRL.
