RACGP Congratulates GPs Receiving Australia Day Honours

The Royal Australian College of GPs (RACGP) has warmly congratulated a host of GPs recognised in the Australia Day 2026 Honours List for their contributions to general practice and their communities.

This year's group is headlined by RACGP Life Member Dr Fiona Stewart, who has been appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for significant service to anatomy as a surgical clinician, researcher and educator, as an academic, and to the community.

Other current and past RACGP members were awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the Australia Day 2026 Honours List:

The late Dr Nicholas Medland AM, past president of the Australasian Society of HIV, Hepatitis and Sexual Health Medicine, was also appointed a Member of the Order of Australia for significant service to sexual health medicine as a physician, clinical epidemiologist, and general practitioner.

RACGP President Dr Michael Wright congratulated all recipients.

"Specialist GPs have an essential role in keeping their communities healthy, and in many cases also take on leadership roles and as advocates for their patients and communities," he said.

"Congratulations to everyone recognised in the Australia Day Honours this year.

"Being awarded or appointed to the Order of Australia is beyond a personal achievement. Recipients may have provided a career of exceptional care, made significant impact through thoughtful innovation, or displayed rare selflessness.

"This recognition reflects truly outstanding service. I'm proud so many GPs have received honours this year.

"On behalf of the profession and the RACGP, I thank the recipients for their service and congratulate them on their recognition."

The 2026 list recognises 949 Australians, including awards in the Order of Australia (General and Military Divisions), meritorious awards, and recognition for distinguished and conspicuous service.

Recipients will attend investiture ceremonies at the Government House in their state or territory in coming months to receive the insignia of their award.
