Raised Pedestrian Crossing Completed on Kite St

The construction of a raised pedestrian crossing on Kite Street between Anson Street and Lords Place has been successfully completed for traffic use.

In short: A new raised pedestrian crossing on Kite Street has been completed to improve safety in the CBD.

The $151,000 project was funded through the NSW Government’s Towards Zero Safer Roads Program.

What’s next: Pedestrian access will be finalised in the coming week with line marking and kerb upgrades.

This important upgrade replaces the existing pedestrian crossing and is designed to improve safety for pedestrians by encouraging vehicles to slow down as they approach.

The crossing was opened to traffic today and the pedestrian access will be finalised in the coming week with line marking and kerb upgrades.

The $151,000 project is funded through Round 2 of the NSW Government’s Towards Zero Safer Roads Program.

Along with the raised crossing, the upgrade includes the installation of new concrete blisters on both sides of the road to further enhance pedestrian visibility and safety.

Council’s Infrastructure Policy Committee Chair Cr Jeff Whitton welcomed the upgrade saying that he remains committed to creating safer streets for all residents and visitors.

“This upgrade is a very important part of improving safety for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists at such a busy crossing in the city’s central business district,” Cr Whitton said.

“The crossing is a key thoroughfare for people walking into the CBD from the south, as well as the Ophir car park and there have been numerous accidents and near misses there over the years.”

Minister for Roads and Minister for Regional Transport, Jenny Aitchison said she is committed to prioritising safety.

“Safety is my number one focus – that’s why the Minns Labor Government is continuing to prioritise the Towards Zero Safer Roads Program to improve roads across our state.”

“I’m pleased we’ve been able to fund this critical upgrade on Kite Street, which will help to improve safety for the community in Orange.”
