Big news πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰! Today, the Government has adopted elements of my Private Members Bills which will enable the capping of aged care management and administration fees. Finally!

In addition, this aged care reform package will implement former senator Rex Patrick’s proposal for 24/7 registered nurses on aged care premises, while allowing for exemptions for smaller regional, rural and remote providers that are struggling to attract staff.

These reforms are an important step toward fixing Australia’s aged care system, though I have some concerns given this legislative package does not specify how it will achieve caps on management fees nor does it provide for a regions-specific funding model.

While I welcome these reforms, the work isn’t done. I will continue to advocate for greater transparency and propose aged care providers be required to disclose executive salaries and profits.

I’ll be speaking on this issue in the House of Representatives in the coming days.
