Safeguarding Australia’s Wildlife From H5 Bird Flu

We are investing $2.8 million to help protect captive populations of threatened species from H5 avian influenza (bird flu).

Across the country, 23 facilities are strengthening biosecurity to safeguard their conservation programs.

Delivered by the Zoo and Aquarium Association (ZAA), this funding will help protect more than 20 threatened species. This includes the critically endangered regent honeyeater and the endangered Tasmanian devil.

Australia is the only continent free from this serious and contagious strain of bird flu. But preparing for its potential arrival is crucial. Overseas it is causing mass death in wild birds and some mammal species.
