Saleyards Upgrades Shine as 2,800 Head Auctioned

Key areas which form part of the Kempsey Regional Saleyards infrastructure upgrades were put to the test on Thursday, as more than 2,800 head of cattle were sold in a strong and well-supported sale.

The sale, which focused mainly on weaners and calves, saw the newly improved grandstand, selling arena, scale and weighing house, agents’ stand and upgraded holding pens all fully operational.

The newly constructed grandstand was a hive of activity, offering improved comfort and visibility for buyers and sellers. Behind the scenes, cattle movements were made more efficient thanks to key infrastructure, including newly installed double-storey truck loading ramps and a purpose-built S-shaped run designed to support animal welfare and streamline handling.

Salegoers can now enjoy comforts of the new facilities which are set to deliver ongoing long-term benefits for livestock producers of the region.

Kempsey Shire Council’s Senior Project Manager, Ben Lee, said the move into the new selling area marks the end of the short-term and temporary selling area, necessary to allow construction of what we see here today.

“Having the new selling area online from today is substantial step forward, and today’s sale demonstrated the difference this investment will make for cattle sales, local producers and the broader livestock industry,” Mr Lee said.

“We are currently completing the fit-out of the new amenities building, and canteen, representing the next stage of significant improvement. Once the sewer connection is finalised, we will be ready to commission and bring them online.”

“The new amenities block is a significant improvement on the previous facilities, and with the canteen now located closer to the sales arena, buyers and vendors can stay right at the heart of the action.”

The Kempsey Regional Saleyards infrastructure upgrade is funded by the Australian and NSW Government’s Bushfire Local Economic Recovery Fund.
