Salute to Fire Crews as Response Efforts Persist
Some of our interstate support crews are returning home today, as the Tullah base camp is packed down.
Minister for Parks, Nick Duigan, said the Tasmanian Government recognises the tireless efforts of all crews across the three fire response agencies – Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service, Tasmania Fire Service and Sustainable Timber Tasmania – and thanks everyone involved for their dedication and commitment to the ongoing response.
“While the job is not yet over and crews continue to monitor conditions and respond accordingly, it is positive to note that some of our friends from interstate are able to safely return home to family and friends,” Minister Duigan said.
“In particular, I extend my gratitude to the crews who have worked hard to minimise impacts on ancient Huon Pines and the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area, including stands of Pencil Pines, King Billy Pines, Fagus and the renowned Overland Track.”
Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Management, Felix Ellis said the scale of the fires had garnered support from both near and far.
“The West Coast fires have been burning for 42 days and have impacted more than 99,500 hectares to date. I’d like to thank all the firefighters, emergency personnel, and support crews working around the clock to protect our West Coast communities,” Minister Ellis said.
“In total, more than 525 firefighters, including volunteers, and more than 500 staff undertaking firefighting operations and working within incident management teams have contributed to this response.
“We also thank our broader support network who have answered the call for assistance from across Tasmania, including contractors, volunteers and staff particularly, Tasmania Police, State Emergency Service and Ambulance Tasmania.”
The West Coast fire complex remains active and is being managed by incident response teams comprising members of Tasmania’s three fire response agencies and led by Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service.
