One year ago today, we lost a titan of our movement and a dear friend, Linda White.
An extraordinarily sharp wit, tireless campaigner, and a person of deep integrity and intellect.
Linda’s legacy is enduring, not only in the victories she won but in the lives she changed and the unionists, activists, and leaders she mentored.
Linda was a fierce and brilliant advocate, always fighting for what was right.
She led some of the most important battles for working people in this country.
As the longest-ever serving woman on the National Executive of the ALP, Linda was a fierce champion for women. She was central to the affirmative action reforms of the ALP, which have led to the first Australian Government with a majority of women parliamentarians.
When Linda was elected to the Australian Senate in 2022, she remained steadfast in her commitment to improving the lives of working women, and Linda’s influence is everywhere. She would have been excited to see the significant strides forward for Australian women in so many policy areas, from workplace and retirement equity to women’s health, but to name a few.
In a tricky situation, I often think – what would LW do? Inevitably, the answer would be push to be bolder, fight harder, and remain a strong and courageous progressive voice.
One year on, her absence is deeply felt, but her impact is undeniable.
My heart is with her brother Michael, her friends and colleagues and her ASU sisters and brothers.
A trailblazer, a mentor, and a fierce advocate for women, for workers and for fairness.
Linda will never be forgotten
Vale Linda White.
