Statement On Federal Election

The Tasmanian Government congratulates the Federal Labor Government on their election.

Premier Jeremy Rockliff said he has reached out to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and congratulated him on his victory and looks forward to continuing to work collaboratively with him in the best interests of Tasmania.

“I commend the local Tasmanian Federal Liberal team on a hard-fought campaign and while I am disappointed for them, Australians have spoken,” Premier Rockliff said.

“I want to particularly thank outgoing Member for Bass, Bridget Archer, who has served the voters of Bass for the past six years with courage and conviction.

“Bridget has been compassionate, genuine and forthright as a local MP and Northern Tasmania is better off because of Bridget’s advocacy.

“I also acknowledge Peter Dutton who has led the Federal Liberal team over the past three years, and his enormous commitment to public service for the better part of the past 25 years. I personally wish Peter and his family all the very best.

“I believe very strongly that Tasmanians expect governments of different political colours to work well together.

“Over the past three years the Prime Minister and I have demonstrated this on many important matters across health, education and infrastructure.

“That being said, we will keep the Federal Labor Government accountable to their promises and ensure they fulfil their commitments made throughout the election.

“I will continue to advocate for an 80:20 Federal-State infrastructure split to ensure we build on the momentum of constructing safer roads and bridges.

“We will also maintain our strong push for the Federal Government to fully fund its share of the Tasmanian health system.

“Tasmania deserves nothing less than its fair share and I will continue to fight every day for the best deal for Tasmanians.”
