Stonnington Backs Parliamentary Arts Funding Boost

Stonnington Backs Parliamentary Arts Funding Boost

The City of Stonnington welcomes the findings of the Victorian Parliament’s Inquiry into the Cultural and Creative Industries and supports its call for increased, CPI-indexed funding and streamlined grants processes.

As one of Melbourne’s most culturally vibrant municipalities, Stonnington is home to a thriving arts scene. From community theatre and local galleries to public art, fashion, music and live performance including at the iconic Chapel off Chapel, the creative sector enriches our neighbourhoods and builds connection. These findings reinforce what our community already knows: the creative sector is not just an asset, it is essential.

Several key recommendations will resonate strongly with local stakeholders:

Stonnington Chief Executive Officer Dale Dickson PSM welcomed the report and said it reinforces the importance of continued investment in Victoria’s creative economy.

“Creative expression sits at the heart of local identity. It connects people, sparks ideas and creates places we want to live, work and visit,” Mr Dickson said.

“The Committee’s findings are a timely reminder of how critical this sector is to Victoria’s future.”

Mr Dickson also welcomed the recommendation to reduce red tape for smaller grant applicants.

“We know that many of our local creatives work on tight margins and limited time. Removing unnecessary administrative barriers allows them to focus more energy on what they do best – creating, performing and inspiring our community,” he said.

The City of Stonnington thanks the Committee for its thorough work and urges the State Government to act on the recommendations. This is an opportunity to back a sector that brings social cohesion, economic value and cultural identity to our communities.
