Strengthening Health Services In East Arnhem Land

The Albanese Labor Government is investing an additional $4.8 million to strengthen local health services in remote East Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory.

The funding, made available through the Aboriginal Benefits Account, will refurbish the Ngalkanbuy Wellness Centre in Galiwin’ku.

The upgrade will help support better health outcomes for Yolngu families.

The project is being delivered in partnership with Miwatj Health Aboriginal Corporation, the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing, and the Indigenous Land and Sea Corporation, who are together contributing $4.8 million.

The Ngalkanbuy Wellness Centre is a key part of the Galiwin’ku community, providing National Disability Insurance Scheme and aged care services, as well as renal support through Purple House and other public health programs.

It also hosts the Marrtjin limurr rrambaŋin program, led by Miwatj, which supports over 200 Yolngu people to reduce diabetes risk through regular health checks and community-led care.

While the Centre continues to serve the community, it is in urgent need of upgrades.

The refurbishment will deliver significant improvements, including the expansion of the renal unit from two to four beds, doubling its capacity to support local patients.

The upgrades will also make the Centre safer, more accessible, and better equipped.

Works will include asbestos removal, roof repairs, new doors and windows, improved wet areas, upgraded air conditioning and lighting, enhanced security and landscaping.

This investment is part of the Albanese Government’s commitment to Closing the Gap, improving health infrastructure and ensuring First Nations communities can access high quality, culturally safe care close to home.

Quotes attributable to Assistant Minister for Indigenous Health, Rebecca White:

“Closing the Gap is one of the most important goals we have as a Government. That can only be done with the support and collaboration of First Nations people across the country.

“It makes a big difference to have these services available right here in the community, rather than having to travel, which can make treatment difficult to maintain. The upgrades to this centre will mean more people have access to high-quality care close to home.
