Strengthening Weed Control Efforts

Support for farmers and community groups in the war against weeds will be advanced with the next round of the Tasmanian Government’s Weeds Action Fund (WAF), opening on Monday 5 May 2025.

Minister for Primary Industries and Water, Jane Howlett, said Stage 3 of the WAF will see $1.19 million available to tackle weeds impacting valuable agricultural and environmental land across the State.

“Landowners, government and the broader community have been working collaboratively since 2018 to take sustainable, long-term actions to address eradication of high priority weeds in Tasmania,” Minister Howlett said.

“Weeds know no borders, which is why a joint approach that supports shared responsibility has been so successful in achieving positive outcomes.

“It is essential that we improve the productive value of agricultural land and protect Tasmania’s natural values by removing the harmful effects of serious weeds.

“Our Government has already delivered $3.6m from the WAF for on-ground weed management projects under Stages 1 and 2, administered by the Department of Natural Resources and Environment Tasmania and NRM North, with support from NRM South and Cradle Coast NRM.

“Past funded projects have tackled serrated tussock in pasture, saffron thistle, cotton thistle, horehound and gorse with success.”

Through WAF Stage 2, NRM North supported the delivery of 61 projects, which saw more than 14,000 hectares contracted for treatment and an average co-investment of 60 per cent from grant recipients.

As part of our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future, Stage 3 funds will provide an opportunity for landowners and land managers to co-invest in removing the threat of serious weeds on their properties.
