Strong Support For Iconic West Coast Wilderness Railway

Long-term planning to ensure a sustainable future for the West Coast Wilderness Railway has taken its next steps.

The Tasmanian Government has convened a roundtable with key industry and business stakeholders to discuss next steps for the Railway.

Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Kerry Vincent, said the Railway is a major drawcard for the West Coast.

"Generations of visitors have enjoyed the rugged beauty of the West Coast via this iconic railway," Minister Vincent said.

"We want to see the railway continue to succeed, and we recognise how important its long-term viability is for the West Coast community.

"Today, we have assembled the industry leaders who are critical to the railway's future.

"The roundtable is about ensuring we have a sustainable way forward, and we are bringing the community and key stakeholders along the journey."

Minister for Tourism, Hospitality and Events, Jane Howlett, echoed these calls.

"Tourism is an important industry for the West Coast," Minister Howlett said.

"We know visitors are drawn to the West Coast to experience its timeless beauty and enchanting landscape - and the Railway is one of the best ways to enjoy it.

"This roundtable is a show of force from key stakeholders, and we understand the importance of the Railway and want to see it succeed long-term."

Chief Executive Officer of the Tourism Industry Council Tasmania, Amy Hills, said that the importance of the railway to the West Coast community could not be under-estimated.

"Only last year, it was recognised on the national stage and accepted into Tourism Australia's Cultural Attractions of Australia collective, which showcases Australia's most significant cultural experiences," Ms Hills said.

"We simply cannot allow this important asset to continue on without a long-term strategic plan, to ensure it remains a vital part of Tasmania's tourism fabric for decades to come."
