Students from Angliss Institute Deliver Hot Cross Buns
Hundreds of hot cross buns are being delivered to charity this week, thanks to the talented bakery students at William Angliss Institute.
Member for Northern Metropolitan Region Sheena Watt representing the Minister for Skills and TAFE Gayle Tierney today joined the annual William Angliss Institute Bun Day. It involves Certificate II and Certificate III in Baking students preparing more than 3,000 buns at their Melbourne CBD campus.
Many of the buns will be delivered to CBD-based youth homelessness charity Frontyard.
William Angliss Institute is Australia’s largest specialist training provider for foods, tourism, hospitality and events. Its annual Bun Day creates a real-life baking experience for students while contributing to charity.
William Angliss Institute features training facilities designed to simulate industry working environments, including its iconic Tram Café.
The Tram Café was part of a package of works funded with $4.1 million from the Allan Labor Government’s TAFE Asset Maintenance Fund, which also supported new Gelateria and Chocolateria training facilities at the Institute.
The Labor Government has provided a further $4 million for a full refurbishment of training kitchens at Angliss, which is expected to begin in July 2025.
This year, William Angliss Institute celebrates 85 years of passing on valuable experience and knowledge to students. However, it won’t be passing on its top-secret hot cross bun recipe – the baking on Bun Day happens in stages, so only a few people know the full method.
Victoria is leading the way on Free TAFE. Since 2019, more than 200,000 students have benefited from Free TAFE, saving an average of $3,000 per course-adding up to over $600 million in total tuition fee savings.
