Tasmania To Light Up With Cracker Night

Tasmania's iconic 'Cracker Night' has been saved after a commonsense exemption from the Victorian Government.

Last year the Victorian Government announced it would impose port restrictions on the shipping of fireworks, however that is the only way to get fireworks into Tasmania.

Premier Jeremy Rockliff said the Tasmanian Government was not going to let the Victorian Government put a stop to a much-loved family tradition.

"Our Government wrote to the Victorian Government to advocate against this change," the Premier said.

"We are glad to hear the shipping exemption will be granted, ensuring Tasmanians will be able to enjoy Cracker Night.

"I thank the Victorian Government for their engagement on this matter."

This common-sense decision by the Victorian Government will provide Tasmania's main firework importer, Brightstar Fireworks, an importation license.

Shannon Palmer, co-owner of Brightstar Fireworks, said that the decision was a massive relief for his business and the thousands of Tasmanians who enjoy Cracker Night each year.

"We are pleased an importation licence will now be issued, and are grateful to the Victorian Government and Work Safe Victoria for their decision which will enable us to safely ship fireworks to Tasmania for this year's Cracker Night," Mr Palmer said.

"I would also like to thank Tasmanian Deputy Premier, Guy Barnett, and his predecessor, Felix Ellis, for their support and advocacy."
