Taxi Rank Removed at Katherine Shopping Centre

The Finocchiaro CLP Government is continuing to Reduce Crime, Rebuild the Economy, and Restore Lifestyle in Katherine, with the permanent removal of the problematic taxi rank outside Woolworths on Katherine Terrace.

From Monday, 28 July 2025, the taxi rank will be closed to improve public safety, address long-standing community concerns, and create a more welcoming environment in the heart of town.

Member for Katherine Jo Hersey said she had long heard repeated concerns from the community about anti-social behaviour linked to the taxi rank.

“Locals deserve to feel safe while doing their shopping or going about their day.

“In our year of Action, Certainty and Security, we’re listening to the community and acting,” Ms Hersey said.

“This change, made in partnership with NT Police and government agencies, will help reduce crime and improve the experience for tourists, families, and local businesses.

“It’s a practical, common-sense decision that will help restore pride in our town.”

Latest crime stats show progress, but challenges remain in Katherine.

Crime statistics from January to May 2025 compared to the same period in 2024 show a 36% drop in commercial break-ins and a 14% reduction in house break-ins.

However, alcohol-related incidents remain a concern in the Katherine community, and we’re working closely with NT Police and local stakeholders to address these ongoing issues.

Cassandra Harney from the Katherine Hotel welcomed the decision.

“The anti-social behaviour at the taxi rank was not a good look for the town and its removal is a step in the right direction.

“Our security team is often required to manage anti-social behaviour at the nearby taxi rank, even though it’s unrelated to our venue.

“We can create a safer and more welcoming environment for locals and tourists when the taxi rank is no longer on the main street.” she said.

Alternative taxi ranks remain available nearby on Warburton Street and Lindsay Street, ensuring continued accessibility for passengers while improving public safety in a key commercial area.
