
Teachers Registration Act Review Consultation Begins
The Tasmanian Liberal Government is committed to enhancing the regulation of teachers to ensure quality education through contemporary standards.
The Teachers Registration Act, introduced in 2000, established the Teacher Registration Board and set minimum professional standards for Tasmanian teachers, prioritising student welfare.
Minister for Education, Jo Palmer, said given the significant changes over the past 25 years, including advancements in safeguarding children and young people, a Teachers Registration Act Review will update the regulatory system.
“This Review will ensure the Act remains contemporary and fit for purpose, supporting teachers’ development and progression through the Professional Standards for Teachers,” Minister Palmer said.
“We have also committed to registering teachers in early childhood education and care (ECEC) settings and are ensuring alignment with the Framework for Teacher Registration.
“The Tasmanian Government is committed to implementing all recommendations made by the Commission of Inquiry into the Tasmanian Government’s Responses to Child Sexual Abuse in Institutional Settings.
“Importantly, the Review includes implementation of recommendations relevant to Teacher Registration.
“Continuing to improve Tasmania’s education system is a key part of the 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future.”

The Review is being overseen by a skills-based Steering Committee, appointed by the Minister and led by an independent Chair. Its membership includes representatives from across the Tasmanian education sector.
A Discussion Paper has now been released, and consultation will close on 11 April 2025.
