NT Government

Territory Acts to Tighten Bail Laws for Safety

The death of 71-year-old Linford Feick on Wednesday afternoon is devastating, and it should never have happened.

It was a senseless act of violence that has shaken our community. We should not be here again.

My heart goes out to the Feick family, friends, customers and community. No one should ever have to endure such horror.

This morning, I spoke with his son Ben and extended our deepest condolences to him and his mother, Margaret.

This morning, our government met on urgency. We are not wasting a single moment.

We have directed the Attorney-General’s Department to urgently draft legislation to strengthen Declan’s Law with additional changes to the Bail Act.

We’ve made it clear for people who commit serious offences, their starting point is no bail.

I have requested the Speaker recall Parliament next week to introduce and pass through all stages this urgent legislation. The laws must be stronger, and they will be.

We are further strengthening bail laws to ensure the Northern Territory has the toughest in the country.

For all serious offences, courts will only be able to consider bail where they are satisfised there is no further risk to the community.

We were elected to reduce crime and restore the Territory lifestyle. That commitment has not changed.

We will do whatever it takes to keep Territorians safe.

We promised action and that’s exactly what we’re delivering.
