Territory Lifestyle On Show This Long Weekend

From Mindil Beach to the red centre, the Finocchiaro CLP Government is proudly backing the Territory lifestyle, makingthe Northern Territory a go-to destination for major events that drive jobs, tourism, and community spirit.

Four huge events took place over the over the King’s Birthday long weekend, including the Tatts Finke Desert Race, Barunga Festival, Darwin GleNTi Festival and Beer Can Regatta.

Minister for Major Events and Tourism and Hospitality Marie-Clare Boothby said these events were true Territory favourites which provided great support and benefits to the economy and communities.

“This weekend, filled with such a variety of vibrant events, has showcased the Territory at its best, with something for everyone to enjoy,” said Ms Boothby.

“Our dry season calendar is packed with so many unique Territory experiences, and this weekend has drawn many people to celebrate culture, creativity, and good old Territory fun.”

“These events, providing a huge economic and social boost, are a key component of our commitment to reducing crime, rebuilding the economy and restoring our lifestyle.”

Darwin GleNTi brought the flavours, dances, and traditions of Greece to the Esplanade where festivalgoers enjoyed a celebration of the Territory’s multiculturalism and community spirit.

Boat racers, supporters and those looking for a day of fun, chaos and colour hit the Mindil Beach shoreline yesterday for the Beer Can Regatta, competing in races with boats made from recycled cans and bottles.

Thrill seekers headed to Central Australia for the legendary Tatts Finke Desert Race, with more than 500competitors tearing through the desert in one of the toughest and most remote off-road races in the world.

Racers are battling it out today on the return run of the 446-kilometre course, with the ‘King of the Desert’ to be crowned later today with the race finishing this afternoon.

The 37th Barunga Festival also continues today, with people enjoying a four-day celebration of immersing in Aboriginal culture through music, sport, live entertainment, and more on Jawoyn country.

“We promised Territorians a year of action, certainty and security, and we are proud to continue delivering on this promise by supporting our major events,” said Ms Boothby.

“Thank you to all of the organisers, volunteers, local businesses and everyone who attended to support our fantastic major events.”

Greek Orthodox Community of NA President Michael Koulianos said: “It was great to see so many people at the Esplanade enjoying a weekend of Greek culture.

“The Darwin GleNTi was a great celebration of multiculturalism in the Northern Territory, and we can’t wait to bring it back again next year.”

Beer Can Regatta Chairperson Connell Brannelly said: “It was a great weekend of racing with plenty of creative boats out on the water once again this year.

“The regatta is a true Territory tradition that brings people together to get creative, cheer on the competitors, relax and have some fun.”
