Territory, Queensland Ministers Unite on Crime, Safety

The Northern Territory and Queensland are working together to tackle crime and improve community safety, with key discussions taking place in Darwin this week between Minister for Fire and Emergency Services and Chief Minister of the Northern Territory, Lia Finocchiaro, and Queensland’s Minister for Police and Emergency Services, Dan Purdie MP.

Minister Purdie was in Darwin for the National Emergency Management Ministers Meeting, hosted for the first time in the Northern Territory. During his visit, the two Ministers took the opportunity to meet and exchange insights on the shared challenges facing both jurisdictions, including youth offending, repeat crime, and strategies for prevention and early intervention.

Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro said both jurisdictions is working to address community safety concerns specific to their regions.

“Queensland and the Northern Territory face many of the same challenges, especially when it comes to youth crime, regional policing, and emergency services capability,” Chief Minister Finocchiaro said.

“Minister Purdie and I had a productive discussion about the strong, decisive actions our governments are making to keep communities safe and hold offenders to account. Whether it’s strengthening bail laws or backing our frontline officers, we are both focused on delivering practical, no-nonsense solutions.”

The latest crime statistics released today confirm the Finocchiaro CLP Government’s focus on the year of action, certainty and security is delivering real results, with crime categories continuing to fall across the Northern Territory.

Comparing January to May 2024 with the same period in 2025, the Territory is seeing strong downward trends in property crime and theft, a clear sign that offenders are being held to account, and victims are being put first.

Key results include:

Robberies down 29%House break-ins down 31%Commercial break-ins down 16%

The latest crime reductions are the direct result of the Finocchiaro CLP Government’s crime reform agenda, including Australia’s strongest bail laws, expanded police powers, more boots on the ground, and a government that backs victims, not offenders.

Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro said the CLP is delivering what Labor never could, real action that puts community safety first.

“Labor failed to act and let crime spiral out of control for eight years. They tied police hands and put offenders before victims. The CLP turned that around,” Mrs Finocchiaro said.

“Our reforms are working, tougher penalties, targeted policing, and systemic change are driving results. And we’re not stopping here, and we know we have more to do.”

The next key reform will be delivered in this month’s parliamentary sittings, with the first tranche of the Youth Justice Act rewrite to be introduced.

The Finocchiaro CLP Government is restoring law and order in the Territory, with real action, not excuses.
