Thank You To Our Teachers And Schools

5 February 2026

Today marks one week since schools across the Northern Territory returned for the 2026 school year.

I want to take a moment to sincerely thank our hardworking educators, school staff, and families who have stepped back into the rhythm of the school year with such professionalism and care. Your commitment to our students does not go unnoticed.

I'd like to acknowledge a few schools who recorded an excellent increase in attendance so far this year, Nitjpurru School (+26.9%), Ti Tree School (21.7%), Lajamanu School (+15.7%) and Borroloola School (+10.1%).

This year, our government is delivering key education reforms, including the phased transition away from middle schools, the continued rollout of explicit teaching practices, and a strong ongoing focus on improving school attendance.

Let me be clear, all children have the right to an education. We will continue to hold to account those who neglect their responsibility and consistently fail to send their children to school. Every child deserves the opportunity to learn, grow and succeed.

I would particularly like to acknowledge the dedicated teams at all our middle schools, for their patience and flexibility while we undertake the secondary schooling reforms.

Last week, I spent the first day of the school year at the remote community school in Barunga, highlighting our government's strong commitment to improving outcomes for students in remote communities. While at Barunga School, I met new teachers who have recently relocated to the Territory from Victoria. Their enthusiasm and dedication were inspiring.

I am also pleased to report that we currently have just 51 teacher vacancies across the Territory - the lowest number on record, and a significant improvement from 117 vacancies at the same time in 2025.

To all those who are new to the Territory this year, welcome.

We hope you fall in love with this incredible place, put down roots and choose to build your future here- perhaps even your first home, supported by our $50,000 First Homeowner Grant here. Available until the end of September 2027.

Once again, thank you for your dedication to education in the Northern Territory. I look forward to visiting you at your schools, across the year and seeing firsthand the great work happening in classrooms right across our Territory.
