“I am shocked and saddened by the death of a young disabled Warlpiri man from Yuendumu after being ‘restrained’ by police at an Alice Springs supermarket earlier this week.

My heart goes out to his mob and all community members who are grieving yet another death in custody, and in Reconciliation Week to boot.

As I said at my press conference on Thursday, we need to eliminate First Nations deaths in custody, and address the systemic racism that underpins the over-incarceration rates for First Nations people. 590 deaths in custody since 1991 is shameful.” – Larissa Waters
