On Wednesday, @batesforbrisbane moved an amendment which called on the Government to establish a Human Rights Commissioner for LGBTIQA+ people. Unfortunately, Labor and the LNP teamed up to vote it down.
He was grateful to have the support of many independent members of the crossbench, who recognised the pressing need to extend anti-discriminatory measures to queer and gender diverse people within our communities, as well of the backing of stakeholder groups like @just.equal.
Establishing a Commissioner for LGBTQIA+ people would have sent the message to queer and gender diverse people that this Government is willing to address the years of awful treatment the community has experienced at the hands of the last Government.
In just the last few years, our communities have lived through the attempt to pass the harmful Religious Discimination Bill, the platforming of harmful transphobic views by the LNP, and global debate over the right of trans people to participate in sports.
Enough is enough. It was incredibly disappointing to see Labor vote down an amendment which would have made life better for LGBTQIA+ people, but this is only the beginning. We’ll keep fighting to improve our communities’ lives, and won’t stop until we get the equal treatment we deserve.
