The Australian Greens

Student debt is rising faster than people are pay it off. If the predicted 7% increase to debts on 1 June 2023 happens, this will mean: 📚 A debt of $24,770 will increase by around $1700
📚 A debt of $40,000 will increase by around $2876 HECs shouldn’t become a “debt for life”. That’s why the Greens have introduced a private members bill to freeze student debt indexation and raise the minimum repayment income to the median wage. Labor cannot ignore the loud, desperate calls from students, graduates, young people, women, unions, and experts for urgent action to address the student debt crisis. Millions of Australians are going to be hit with a student debt avalanche on June 1. The Government has the power to step in and stop it, which is what the Greens are calling on them to do. Getting a degree should change your life for the better. Not straddle you with mountains of debt.

One Australian has a HECS debt of more than $700,000. So what are the solutions to spiralling student debts?
