
The world’s highest court, the International Court of Justice, has declared that countries are legally obligated to combat climate change.
This means Australia – as the 2nd largest exporter of fossil fuels globally – not only has a responsibility to stop extracting and burning fossil fuels here, but also a responsibility for the impacts of our exports.
With the Greens in the balance of power in the Senate, Labor has the opportunity to work with us to strengthen environmental laws, and deliver strong climate action. Just yesterday, we introduced our Climate Trigger Bill that would ensure the climate impacts of projects are considered.
The ball is in their court. So what is it Labor – meaningful climate action or more fossil fuels?
