Trump is reviewing AUKUS to make sure it’s “America first”.
The Greens have long-held the position that Australia shouldn’t be joined at the hip to the US.
We should end AUKUS.
The USA reviewing AUKUS shows what the Greens have been warning about for years – this deal makes Australia a junior partner in America’s military strategy, not an equal ally.
Trump is erratic, reckless and careless. He puts his allies last. The US President didn’t even know what AUKUS was when asked in February this year.
We shouldn’t be spending $375 billion on a nuclear submarine deal that our “partner” might walk away from.
In a cost of living crisis that’s pushing people to the brink, that money should be spent on things the community needs – like healthcare, housing and education.
At the very least the Parliament should launch a full inquiry into this dud deal, and allow critics of AUKUS a seat at the table, not just a nodding bunch of Labor and Coalition members.
We should determine our future – not the US or Trump.
