You may have missed this – Labor KNEW the approval of Woodside’s Northwest Shelf extension would endanger the UNESCO World Heritage listing of the Murujuga rock art – but they went ahead and did it anyway!
Sophie McNeill asked WA Environment Minister, Matthew Swinbourn, when his government received a report from UNESCO that stated Woodside’s acidic emissions would have significant degrading impact on the petroglyphs at Murujuga to the point where the rock art would no longer meet the requirements for World Heritage status.
Swinbourn’s reply was that Labor knew this on the 24th of May: 4 whole days before Federal Environment Minister Murray Watt approved the Northwest Shelf extension!
WA and Federal Labor chose to stay silent on UNESCO’s concerns about the Woodside risk to their World Heritage listing. Instead, Labor went ahead and did exactly what Woodside wanted – approving this massive gas extension until 2070! 🤯
