The pressure is building....

The Greens (WA)

The pressure is building.

Today it’s been reported that even Labor MPs and members are pushing for Federal Labor to adopt the Greens housing policies, including phasing out negative gearing.

Federal Labor’s centrepiece housing policy doesn’t guarantee a cent in funding for housing and does nothing for renters, and now even Labor MPs and members are saying Labor has to do more, so our Federal Greens Housing spokesperson Max Chandler-Mather, Federal MP for Griffith is calling on the Prime Minister to come to the table to work out a real plan to tackle the housing crisis.

Renters and people waiting for social housing can’t wait until a future fund makes a possible return, nor until after the next election in 2025. They need action right now. The Greens are ready and willing to negotiate a plan to invest billions of dollars in public and affordable housing right now and coordinate an emergency national freeze on rent increases.

Phasing out negative gearing and capital gains tax concessions for people with more than one investment property would raise $74 billion over the next 10 years, which we could invest in public and affordable housing and incentive payments to the states to coordinate a national freeze on rent increases.

It’s outrageous that this federal budget included billions of dollars in tax concessions for property investors that flow overwhelmingly to the top 10% of Australians – and nothing for renters beyond $1.70 a day in rent assistance, and not a single extra cent for public housing construction.

The pressure the Greens are mounting is working. Our message to every Labor MP across the country is this: the Greens will keep knocking on doors until your government actually begins to negotiate in good faith to work together on a plan to tackle the housing crisis.
