The science is clear. If we want to prevent more than 1.5 degrees of global warming, we need to stop opening new coal and gas. The first step in fixing a problem is to stop making it worse.
Just one project, the proposed Scarborough gas project here in WA, will wipe out any climate gains from Labor’s proposed safeguard measure – and there are 117 new coal and gas projects in the approval’s pipeline.
Over the last decade, fossil fuel corporations have donated over $13.7 million to the Labor and Liberal/National parties. Both parties have a vested interest in letting these corporations off the hook.
The Greens don’t accept corporate donations, and we’ll be using our increased representation in the House and Senate to negotiate with Labor on improving their Safeguard Mechanism. We have offered our support on the condition that the government amend the bill to stop the opening of new coal and gas projects.
