WA’s youth justice system is broken, leaving kids more likely to reoffend and causing devastating harm to individuals and communities. In the past 18 months alone, two children in detention in WA lost their lives. We can and must do better.
Last week, the Greens (WA) announced our plan to completely overhaul the youth justice system in WA. We’re calling on the government to massively increase funding for justice reinvestment, alongside preventative and therapeutic programs for young people to keep them out of prison.
We will also push the next government to shut down the inhumane Unit 18 at Casuarina Prison as a priority, and raise the criminal age of responsibility from 10 to 14.
Kids need help, not harm. Only the Greens have a plan that prioritises the wellbeing of young people and addresses the root cause of offending.
