Wittenoom is a public health and a cultural heritage issue. It’s the largest site of contamination in the southern hemisphere, the contamination is spreading, and successive governments have been kicking the can down the road while Banjima elders have pleaded for action. FOI has revealed that Gina Rinehart, daughter of the man who opened the asbestos mine in the first place, is seeking to mine iron ore in the contaminated area. Niels Glahn-Bertelsen, Greens candidate for North West Central spoke to ABC Radio calling on the Government to finally take action: “They’ve closed the site which is not the same as cleaning the contamination. It needs to be cleaned up. It needs to happen as soon as possible.”
